چکیده

In this paper, we propose a new bandwidth allocation technique where a new stream can preempt an appropriate amount of bandwidth from other existing streams, considering both quality and priority requirements of users. The existing preemption-based technique has focused on the preemption among the streams with the same user. However, in multi-party multimedia applications, there would be a case where we would like to raise the quality of a speci c stream (e.g. in a video conference, the video stream of a new chair may become more important than those of the existing participants). Therefore the preemption should be allowed among streams with di erent users and the best preemption in terms of their requirements should be provided. In our technique, using the algorithm for solving the minimum ow cost problem, the preemption is calculated so that the total loss of quality and priority of the existing streams can be minimized. We have implemented the proposed technique and evaluated it through the experiment using MPEG1 video streams, and have con rmed that our technique can keep a high frame rate for each existing MPEG1 video stream even when accommodating a lot of new streams.

A Service Kernel for Multimedia Endstations

Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for delay sensitive networked mul-timedia applications, such as teleoperation, must be application-to-application. We describe a set of services, a service kernel, required at the end points, for multimedia call establishment with QoS guarantees. These services provide: (1) Translation among diierent domain speciications (layer-to-layer translation) and domai...

A CORBA Framework for Managing Real-Time Distributed Multimedia Applications

This paper presents a real-time distributed multimedia framework, based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), that provides resource management and Quality of Service (QoS) for CORBA applications. The framework consists of multimedia components and resource management components. The multimedia components produce multimedia streams and combine multimedia streams generated by...

Interactors: Capturing Qos and Resource Requirements between Multiple Cooperating Objects

Complex distributed applications, including virtual environments, and real-time multimedia require quality of service (QoS) guarantees in the end-to-end transfer of information across a network. For many applications, these QoS requirements are formulated on application-level objects and are dynamic, since they may change during the execution of the application. To support dynamic QoS guarantee...

Managing Real-Time Distributed Multimedia Applications

Distributed multimedia applications are characterized by timing constraints and endto-end quality of service (QoS) requirements, and therefore need efficient management mechanisms to respond to transient changes in the load or the availability of the resources. This chapter presents a real-time distributed multimedia framework, based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), tha...

Service Creation, Renegotiation and Adaptive Transport for Multimedia Networking

In this paper, we describe a prototype implementation of the Binding Architecture [1], an open architecture that achieves seamless binding between networking and multimedia devices for the purpose of creating distributed multimedia services. As a proof of concept, a multi-party teleconferencing service was built. The service creation framework has the following characteristics: binding of diffe...
